SXSW Expands its Private Parties, Venues into East Austin

East Austin is full of life this week.  The sounds of bands playing fill the streets, as do the people lining up to see them, and pedicabs are running up and down East 5th Street all day and night, transporting party goers to venues that last until the late night hours.

What was a vacant piece of land in East Austin next to the train tracks has turned into the largest SXSW day party this year, the Fader Fort.  Sponsored by Levi’s Jeans and Fader Magazine, the Fader Fort offers SXSW revelers the ultimate experience:  a combination of the latest fashion, complimentary cocktails & other freebies, and a chance to listen to what will become and has already become the greatest bands for 2009.

We have been to the Fader Fort several times already this week, and the crowds have increased every day as word has spread.  Everyone we’ve talked to loves the fact that the Fader Fort is in East Austin.  Last year it was located in downtown Austin and was limited to a much smaller venue.

When the sun sets, East Austin venues really come alive.  There are several exciting venues, both new and old, on East 6th Street that have official SXSW showcases this year.  When we were walking home from the Fader Fort one evening, we stopped into one named The Music Gym to check it out.  There wasn’t any exercise equipment, but this was definitely a place where a band can flex their music muscles.

SXSW is a huge revenue earner for Austin, and I’m sure East Austin is happy to receive an increased share of it this year.  Next year will undoubtedly be another great year for SXSW, and as the event grows larger, so will its locations in East Austin.
